Mission 8 - A Blast from the Past
Location: Bridge
Timeline: 2296/03/13 1300 hours
Drake was bored. Orbiting a planet was boring. There was nothing to do but just sit and wait until someone told him to plot a new course. Sure, if some hostile ship came out of the blue, he might be ordered to target it, but that seemed only slightly likely. Why would the Romulans trespass just barely on this side of the Neutral Zone? Clearly already had, but it seemed tactical and none of their ships were in sight.
With nothing to do, he decided that it was time to make something happen. He leaned over towards Kallani and asked softly, "So, what do you think is going on? What I would not give for a little action...." There was a slight mischievous grin on Drake's face when he told Kailani he wanted a little action.
Kailani grinned back. "Well..." She sighed. "I don't like waiting either. I'm a pilot. I was born to go fast. But we have to be at the ready if we need to get out of here on short notice." Her fingers twitched a little on her controls. "I wish we did know what was going on."
"The problem is the planet," Drake answered. "Something about the atmosphere is interfering and now that nearly every chief of staff is down there and well...." He looked skeptically over at Radars.
"Well?" she prodded, slightly at a loss. She had thought he was just flirting, but it somehow seemed more serious.
He nodded his head in Radar's direction. "What do you think will happen here? But the action will be nice. Do you think we're going to be stuck in our chairs the entire time?"
Glenn sat in the center chair. As he was now the most senior officer on board, he was watching over the ship. "It's not too bad orbiting a planet. At least it's easy work," he said to the other people on the bridge.
"So, you're not concerned in the least about most of our Chiefs being down on the planet?" Drake asked seriously. Who was this guy? Half the time he was hitting on every woman on the ship, especially the Captain and the other half of the time he was lazier than a housecat. How in the world did he get ranked so high. He looked over at Kailani and rolled his eyes trying to convey, "Can you believe this guy?"
"I'm extremely concerned," Kailani said. "I just want to be ready and available when it stops..." She looked at Glenn. "When it stops being easy work."
Glenn let out a mocking yawn. "We'll cross that bridge when we come to it. They're all grown boys and girls, they can handle themselves."
Drake turned back to Glenn and asked, "Shouldn't we be trying to get through the interference or something?"
"Hey White Cat. Can you break through that inteference?" He asked lazily directing the question to Sistine sat at the communications console.
"Don't call me White Cat!" Sistine snapped back before turning her face away. "And no, I can't get anything through ok. I have been trying, but our communications array isn't powerful enough..." she said with a sigh.
"Well there you are; you heard her. There's nothing we can really do but sit here on our butts and wait for them to come back. That was what they wanted us to do..." Glenn told the bridge as he repositioned the captain's chair into a more reclined position. "We might as well all just take a nap..."
Drake found it terribly difficult to disagree with the lazy engineer but it still galled him to see the captain's chair being repositioned in a reclined position. He whispered over at Kallani, "Want to see if we can take a small break from here, since we're doing nothing and he's doing less?"
Kailani shook her head. "Some of us don't nap on duty," she answered. Her remarks were aimed more at the engineer than at Drake.
So much for a quick break to get to navigate the helmswoman a bit, Drake thought with a wry chuckle. He wondered what the lazy Engineer would think about that.
"We can grab a drink after the shift," Kailani volunteered more agreeably.
"If he ever allows us to leave," Drake answered while rolling his eyes.
"He will when it's over," she reassured him. Then she leaned in to whisper, "Or he's relieved."
"I have a bad feeling that it will be later rather than sooner," drake to Kallani.
"That might be," she answered.
