Personality & Traits
| General Overview | Has a laid-back personality, warm and accepting of individual quirks, though more than willing to speak his mind when it's needed. And while he excels at what interests him, he feels no particular need to compete with anyone; he has an artistic appreciation of the natural world as well as being unapologetically curious about pretty much everything. He seldom raises his voice and exhibits an almost 'superhuman' calm. That's not to say that he doesn't have a temper because he does, he's just found ways to channel his anger that don't involve outbursts, either verbal or physical. He grew up on Oahu, as part of a close-knit, extended family, and this shows in the respect and attention he shows to family. He plays as hard as he works -- so, when he's not involved in something, he loves to surf, go diving, and just generally play. He's got an easy laugh and a ready sense of humor. Makai, or Kai as his friends call him, is at times at odds with himself. Generally, easy going, with a ready smile, he also possesses an insatiable intellectual curiosity. As a result, his mind tends to always be ‘on’ and leads him to always want to know how things work, from people, to equipment, to the cosmos. He can lose himself down an investigative rabbit hole that eats up his free time. He plays a high value on honesty, integrity, and respect. His Hawaiian roots matter to him as do the traditions he grew up with. The other side of that means that he has little to no respect for individuals who lack those qualities. Quickest way to his bad side - be disrespectful, lack integrity in your actions toward others, and lie to his face. |

| Strengths, Weaknesses, and Quirks | Strengths > Learns quickly and has an incredible memory > Speaks Olelo Hawai’i (or Hawaiian) at mother tongue level. Also fluent in Japanese and Federation Standard. He knows enough Chinese to socialize and order food. Passive understanding of Vulcan. > Good at making connections and associations. Can stitch together unrelated ideas and see, almost instantly, novel relationships and angles. Highly imaginative. > Extremely loyal and devoted to family/protective > Loves problem-solving and delving into things he doesn’t (yet) understand > Diplomatic, good at working with others > If he’s interested, he has the ability to become exceptional; however, he feels absolutely no need to compete with anyone other than himself. Weaknesses > Hates the cold. Not at Vulcan levels, of course, but as a child of Hawaii, he loves the heat. > He doesn’t wake up easily. Worst times at the Academy were those late night drills where it was anyone’s guess whether he showed up fully dressed or even, you know, actually awake. > Tends to work later than he should. Sleep is the first casualty of whatever’s he’s working on. |

| Defining Quotes and/or Character Beliefs |
| Personal History | Born in Haleiwa, on the north shore of Oahu, in 2346, Kai grew up on or near the beach. He has a wide circle of friends and an even wider circle of Aunties and Uncles. Some say that the Nokamura's are related to half of Oahu and there may just be some truth to that. He considered becoming a professional surfer for a while but a restless intellect and an insatiable curiosity led him toward the exploration and the stars. He got interested in writing while he was still in school and, under the pen name 'Constantine Rook', developed his first mystery, Hardcastle's Folly, in his senior year. He made it available to his family to read and over time, gained more of an audience than he would ever have expected. Overnight, Constantine Rook had a following; he was a published author with the proviso that no one would ever know who he really was. Family events were the norm – and that included the extended family and those who were friends but were considered family. Someone got married. Someone had a baby. There was always something happening. He learned Go from the older members of the family and there was usually a game or two going at the family events. And somehow, he found a way to fit in all the things he wanted to do, usually at the expense of sleep. Senior year was a time for figuring out what he wanted to do with his life. While he loved surfing and was good enough to compete, exploration, seeing what was out there, appealed to his restless intellect. He remained undecided until a Starfleet recruiter at his school's career day romanced him with the possibilities. |

| Education Record | ||
| Service Record | 2384-2387: Starfleet Academy, Command Track His first year at the Academy was a time of transition and a lot of culture shock. Boots instead of sandals or bare feet. Uniforms and freezing dorm rooms. Formality instead of the laid-back culture he had known all his life. But the recruiter didn't lie, there were a whole lot of interesting things to learn about, to discover. Probably the hardest thing for him was being on time for his classes and so, he struck a deal with his quad-mates. They got him up and out the door for class on time and he'd help them with their studies. Of course, sometimes, their methods were a little harsh - like being unceremoniously dumped on the floor when he wouldn't get up - but it worked and the four of them became good friends. He brought them home to meet his family and taught them some basic Hawaiian and more importantly, how to surf. Constantine Rook, with some input from his quad-mates, put out his second adventure that year -- The Rooster Crows at Midnight. By the end of his time at the Academy, he had gained a reputation for his creative solutions and how he would work on a problem to the exclusion of all else. He also became well known for his last possible second appearance at classes and it was that tendency, which one of his professors abhorred, that prevented him from being first in his class. Not that it mattered to him. 2387-2391: USS Valley Forge, Helm Because the ship had an opening, Ensign Nakamura was brought aboard as the ship’s Helm officer; over the course of the next year and half, in conjunction with his bridge duties, he was rotated through the departments on board to deepen his understanding of how the ship functioned overall. After two years on board, he was promoted to Lieutenant JG having proved himself to be courageous under fire and good at out-of-the-box solutions. His inherent grace and charm, his natural respect for alien cultures, made him an asset to his away team assignments. It became evident early on that Kai was entirely suitable for command; he took the time to study and learn and to grow from each assignment. > Participated in the rescue of trapped miners who had violated the sovereignty of another colony world. He worked with both colonies and helped them begin the process of working cooperatively for the betterment of both worlds and was part of the team that went into the mines, helping rescue twenty souls in the process. Received a commendation for his actions. > Promoted to Third Officer Officer. Was given increasing responsibility on his away team assignments and stood watches on the Bridge, usually Gamma Shift. Proved himself to be a natural leader who was willing to listen and not afraid to lead. At the end of four years, the Captain called him into the Ready Room and told Kai that he felt as though he were holding him back as there was no room for upward movement. That he was ready to take on a bigger role. The going away party was epic. 2291-2296: USS Steadfast, Second Officer Participated in the ship’s annual team events - the crazier the better, that was the Captain’s motto - and won three years out of four. Spent five years aboard the Steadfast first as the ship’s Second Officer and later as First Officer. He led away teams, stood watch on the Bridge, and worked with the Captain to achieve mission goals. The Steadfast worked primarily on the border and was primarily responsible for the elimination of an Orion Syndicate ring operating near the Klingon border. 2396-Present: USS America, First Officer |
