Defining Quotes and/or Character Beliefs | “You don’t owe prettiness to anyone. Not to your boyfriend/spouse/partner, not to your co-workers, especially not to random men on the street. You don’t owe it to your mother, you don’t owe it to your children, you don’t owe it to civilization in general. Prettiness is not a rent you pay for occupying a space marked ‘female’.” ~Erin McKean “The greatest thing in the world is to know how to belong to oneself.” ― Michel de Montaigne |
Personal History | She grew up on Turkana IV and it wasn’t until she hit Starfleet Academy that she learned, through medical testing, that she wasn’t a native of that world. Not that she would ever track down her parents down though the thought occurred once or twice. No, to her mind, she was the byproduct of a night of pleasure gone wrong and conveniently dumped in the biggest, lawless hell hole they could find. Why would she care if they didn’t? She grew up hard because you had to be hard to survive on Turkana. While the government had not yet fallen, there were significant problems and the ‘writing was on the wall’ so to speak. She was small, slender (for that you can read underfed), and smart; she created a series of hiding spaces for herself that were not visible to the outside world. She found comfort in small places where approach by others was limited. She nearly always slept facing the opening with some sort of a weapon in hand. Couldn’t sleep without it actually. Until she was 14, she had no idea that any other sort of life existed. She traded information for safe passage or goods. Worked at odd jobs. And never, never trusted anyone else with her safety. When she was 14, she came into contact with a Starfleet Intelligence Operative working under cover. While wary of contact with anyone, she also recognized an opportunity and over a series of guarded conversations, helped him gather the intel he needed. When he left the planet, with his mission complete, he took her along. And while she was suspicious of his intentions, she figured anything was better than where she was. He took her to Earth, to his parents’ home in Ayrshire, and it was there that she began to understand what life could be. She still slept with a knife under her pillow and her hand curled around its handle, but,, with the help of a patient and long-suffering counselor, she came to grips with this new reality. She would never be a typical teenager, childhood had been left far behind her, but she could learn to let down her guard a bit. To discover what life could be when you weren’t worried about the next meal or evading capture. She was not a typical candidate for Starfleet Academy but she was a natural for Security |
