Defining Quotes and/or Character Beliefs

Personal History Maya was born December, 2, 2265 in Sucre, Bolivia. Her father was a diplomat and her mother taught literature and history. She could speak English/Standard, Spanish and the native dialects of Quechuan and Aymaran before she started school. Words came easily to her and she found she had an aptitude for picking up languages and how words worked together. The fact that her mother was Betazoid helped as she could often sense what a person meant.

Her father, a regional diplomat, is a descendant of the early Incan rulers and Maya has always been fascinated by the pre-Columbian people of the Americas, their history, culture amd language.

Her mother passed on to Maya a love of literature and the history around it, which translated to a love of words and their origins. She would often look up a work of literature in its original language so she could see how the author chose the right word to portray his meaning. She has a special fondness for folklore and fairy tales of many countries.

While Maya was in primary school she would often spend her free time learning. By the time she graduated from prep school she was fluent in 14 languages and conversant in 6 more.

She has three older brothers and spent much of her childhood trying to be like them. She is more comfortable climbing trees and talking sports than she is shopping for clothes. She prefers the company of men because their conversations are often more interesting. This, unfortunately, led to more than a few problems in her teen years. She still has more male friends than female friends, but this generally doesn't bother her.

Maya was offered a variety of jobs as interpreter but she wanted to learn more. So she left home and attended a university where she could focus on languages and etymology. The more she learned, the more she found there was to learn -- and the easier it became to pick up languages.

Her fascination with her native culture led her to add history and archaeology to her studies. She continued to learn as much as she could, spreading from terran to Vulcan, to Romulan and then other languages and cultures.

She graduated with honors and began to look around for a new challenge. She was offered positions as a teacher, interpreter, and archaeologist with various organizations, but the drive to learn took her to Starfleet as it gave her the best opportunity to travel the galaxy, exploring old and new worlds, their history and languages.
