+Can take command of the situation with ease
+Competitive

-Loneliness, which he will do anything to prevent

-Can be too competitive, but is getting better at that

Ambitions Magnus is very good at starship command and will accept a CO position if offered one, but that is not his ambition. After an illustrious career, he would love to retire to an academic setting, teaching linguistics, and apply what he’s learned to his academic pursuits.
Hobbies, Interests, Likes, and Dislikes Magnus is an avid reader, but he does not particularly enjoy reading alone. He much prefers a library or social setting, where people can read and occasionally talk, but otherwise just be in each other’s company.

He goes to the gym, but usually reads or listens to audiobooks on the cardio or weight machines. He doesn’t usually engage in team sports, but he’ll try anything once. He enjoys watching broadcasts of some sports, but not others.

He loves camping and walking in nature. He knows enough about the natural world to survive while camping and foraging, but is by no means an expert.

Magnus also loves movies, having been introduced to them by his mother and then having found libraries of them on Earth. He set up in his quarters a small viewing area where he and a couple of friends (or a girlfriend) could watch movies or sports games.
Languages Known Multiple Earth languages, Federation Standard, Betazoid, Vulcan, Andorian, Klingon, Romulan, Cardassian, and Xindi-humanoid. Can understand spoken Tholian and Xindi-Insectoid

Defining Quotes and/or Character Beliefs

Personal History Magnus William Grey was born on Proxima II. Nycholas Grey was a poet who lived a fairly reclusive life on the outskirts of the city of Cochrane. He was born on Proxima and his family lived there for generations. Rose Isabelle Howard was a professor of mathematics at the University of Cochrane, who moved to Proxima from Earth. The two came together during a reception and started a relationship. Two years later, the two were married, and one year later still, Rose gave birth to their son, whom they named Magnus William. After four more years, they had a daughter, Reina Vanessa.

Magnus’s childhood was typical for any young boy on Proxima. He lived in the outskirts, but went to school in the city, and so was not as anti-social as his father might prefer. His mother ensured he was involved in as many group activities as possible and introduced him to many aspects of Earth culture, especially literature, movies, and some professional sports. He was very close to his sister, who was even more social than he was and helped him get girlfriends in high school.

From a young age, Magnus combined the mathematics of his mother and the poetry of his father into a love of languages. He found he was very good at intuiting meaning with minimal cues; the result of good training and some amount of affinity for etymology. By the time he turned 18, he knew multiple Earth languages, Federation Standard, Betazoid, Vulcan, Andorian, Klingon, and Romulan.

Though no one in his family considered a career in Starfleet, Magnus saw it as a chance to apply his skills for the betterment of sentientkind. He moved to Earth and immediately immersed himself in Starfleet culture. Suddenly surrounded by other linguists as good as he was, he put in extra effort to be the best. He was accused of cheating, but repeatedly proved that he was just very skilled at languages. He took courses at oration, another thing he enjoyed and at which he was competent. During his fourth year at the Academy, he found quarters at Starbase One, where he made many friends, including the Liu family, whose daughter he taught Standard as they taught him Mandarin.

Upon graduation, he was offered an assignment aboard USS Payette, an Akula-class ship patrolling the Klingon and Romulan neutral zones. He was eventually promoted and made Assistant Chief of the department.

In 2290, Magnus was promoted to Chief Communications Officer and re-assigned to the Excelsior-class USS Avenger. Here he learned the hard truth about military service, that as you transfer, you lose the friends you made on your posting. He became much lonelier until an Ensign named Alice Rios brought him out of his shell. The two began a romantic relationship that ended only when she was promoted and reassigned. This saddened him again, but during their time together, she had taught him good ways of making friends. He will always remember her fondly. Still, he began to crave something more permanent, and began looking into long-term retirement options that included an assignment where he could still use his skills.

USS Avenger was part of the events leading up to the signature of the Khitomer Accords. It was Magnus’s keen ear that identified comm chatter between Romulan ships which corroborated the accusation that the Romulans were collaborating with rogue elements within Starfleet and the Klingon Empire against peace. This earned Magnus a promotion to Lieutenant Commander and a spot as Second Officer.

In 2296, he was offered two positions: first, the opportunity to serve as First Officer aboard the USS America, one of the last Constitution-class ships in the fleet. Second, an honorary doctorate and professorship at the University of Olympus on Mars, where he could set roots and apply his skills. He chose to stay in Starfleet for now.
